Biology Tutors

Mr Daniel Chan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons.) in Chemistry from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Advanced) from the University of Sydney, Australia, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Daniel has three years of tutoring experience in Hong Kong and Australia, in addition to his two years at International Scholars Tuition School. He has tutored a student from German Swiss International School on the SAT Biology Subject Test. He has also taught respiration and photosynthesis to an OCR A-Level Biology student from Harrow School, and transport and microorganisms to a AQA GCSE Biology student from The Royal High School, UK.

Dr Jenkins Tsang earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics (Combined Honours) and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Jenkins has been working in Research and Teaching at the University of British Columbia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Hong Kong since 2002. His research has been published in scientific journals.

He has helped many of his students in one-to-one tutorials and has been successful in guiding his students to pursue further studies and careers in Science. Dr Tsang was awarded the J Fred Muir Memorial Scholarship in Science and the British Columbia Government Scholarship. Jenkins is experienced in teaching biology at various levels, ranging from primary school students from German Swiss International School learning introductory plant biology, to IB higher-level students learning genetics and biochemistry at Chinese International School and Canadian International School.

 

Ms Wen Yen Chan has a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Biology from the University of Bath, England. She is currently studying Dental Surgery (BDS) at the University of Hong Kong.

Wen Yen has been tutoring at International Scholars Tuition since May 2007. She has tutored cells and human biology to an AQA GCSE Biology to a student of Badminton School, UK, and also inheritance and nutrition to an AQA GCSE student at The Royal High School, UK.

Ms Sincere Wong holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of British Columbia, Canada. In addition, she has a Diploma of Accounting from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. She is currently studying Dental Surgery (BDS) at the University of Hong Kong.

Sincere has had previous tutoring experience in Canada, and she has been tutoring at International Scholars Tuition since June 2007. She has tutored genetics and metabolism to an OCR Biology A-Level student at Roedean School, UK, and molecular biology and biochemistry to an OCR Biology A-Level student at Malvern College, UK.

Business Tutor

Mr Don Ho has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Victoria (Canada) and Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta (Canada). Don was also awarded the South-East Asia Business Research Grant and the Asia Pacific Scholar's Grant.

Don has tutored Marketing to a GCSE student from The Royal High School, Bath (UK), Financial Ratio Analysis to an IB Diploma student from Island School, and Human Resources to an AS/A2 A-Level student from Beechwood Sacred Heart School (UK). In addition, Don has tutored many undergraduate and MBA students.

Chemistry Tutors

Dr Jenkins Tsang earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics (Combined Honours) and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Jenkins has been working in Research and Teaching at the University of British Columbia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Hong Kong since 2002. His research has been published in top-tier scientific journals. He has helped many of his students in one-to-one tutorials and has been successful in guiding his students to pursue further studies and careers in Chemistry. Dr Tsang was awarded the J Fred Muir Memorial Scholarship in Science and the British Columbia Government Scholarship.

Jenkins has tutored organic, inorganic and quantum chemistry at the university level to an undergraduate student from Imperial College London, gases and periodicity to an IB Diploma student at Canadian International School, energetics and kinetics to students in preparation for the Chemistry SAT Subject Test, and structure and bonding to a CIE IGCSE student at German Swiss International School.

Chinese Mandarin Tutors

Ms Rosa Kei is a native Mandarin speaker, who can read, write, and tutor in Traditional and Simplified Chinese. Rosa earned a Master of Science in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford, where she was also awarded a Certificate of Teaching English as a Second Language with Distinction. Rosa gained a Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as an International Language from the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd), where she graduated with Distinction, and was placed on the Student Honour List. Rosa completed the Bachelor of Arts (Second Honour First Division) in Language Studies for Professions (specialized in Translation) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), where she was placed on the Dean's List twice. Rosa also was twice awarded the Scholarship for Hall Residence of HKPU by the Department of English and the Warden Scholarship. While at HKPU, Rosa was the Internal Secretary of the Putonghua Debate School Team, which competed in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. Rosa is currently co-developing the Hong Kong British Parlimentary Debate Course with Mr Cooper Wilhelm of Yale, which will use SAT Essay Prompts as topics of debate.

Before joining IST, Rosa taught at Hong Kong International School as a Chinese Studies Teacher, as part of her MA Internship in Mandarin. Rosa conducted  Chinese Studies classes for Middle School students aged from 12 to 15 years, who had different levels of Chinese proficiency: Second Language Learners (SLL) and Near Native Learners (NNL).

She joined us in 2011, and has tutored several students from German Swiss International School who are preparing for Edexcel IGCSE and GCE A2; a student from American International School, on listening, reading, grammar and writing; a student from South Island School, who is preparing for CIE IGCSE; and a student from Renaissance College who is preparing for IB Chinese.

Ms Juliana Ma is a native Mandarin speaker with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Lanzhou University, Gansu Province, China and a Master of Arts in Journalism from the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).

Juliana obtained a Mandarin Chinese Certificate Band 1 and a Level 3 National Accreditation for Translators and Interpreters, both in China. Juliana's aptitude for tutoring was reflected in her employment as an English Tutor for the Lanzhou University Training Department during her studies. She joined us in January 2010, and has tutored students from St Paul's Co-educational College, on listening, reading Chinese Literature, grammar and written comprehension; a student from German Swiss International School who is preparing for her IGCSE; and students from Tonbridge School who are preparing for their AS and A2 exams.

Economics Tutor

Mr Don Ho co-founded International Scholars Tuition School in 2005 and has been tutoring in Hong Kong since 2000. Don is a registered teacher with the Education Bureau (EDB). Don studied Economics as part of his Business Major for his Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of Alberta (Canada) and for his Master of Business Administration from the University of Victoria (Canada).

Don has tutored Fiscal and Monetary Policy to an Edexcel AS/A2 A-Level Economics to a student from Aiglon College (Switzerland) and Inflation to a student from Millfield School (UK). He has also tutored Aggregate Demand to a student from St Joseph's College (HK), Unemployment to a CIE IGCSE student from German Swiss International School (GSIS), and the entire syllabus to an Edexcel IGCSE self-study private candidate.

English Tutors

Mr Colin Shields graduated with honours from Cambridge University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. At Cambridge, Colin specialised in the 19th Century novels of George Eliot and in Renaissance poetry and drama. The broad nature of the Cambridge course that Colin studied means that he is familiar with most periods and authors taught in Hong Kong schools, including The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and all the plays of Shakespeare covered by the IB and IGCSE courses worldwide. He has also read widely in contemporary novels and poetry. As a student, Colin attained many high test scores, giving him a good foundation for teaching both achievement and ability tests. He scored a 790 on his SAT Verbal component, and also gained top marks on AP and A-level tests. Colin finished his schooling in the UK at the Magdalen College School, an academically selective day school in Oxford. There, he won a prize for his essay-writing.

Colin has more than one year of tutoring 13+, IGCSE, and A-Level at a professional agency in the UK, in several subjects: English Literature, History, Philosophy, and Enrichment. Colin's teaching method depends on ambitious goals reached through patient and attentive instruction at an appropriate pace. When teaching literature, collaborative reading of primary texts is important to Colin's teaching style. This approach, combined with some specific guidance on exam technique, allows the student to make incisive arguments in an exam setting drawn from broad and authentic learning, as well as to build intellectual skills of benefit in all subjects and throughout life.

Don has tutored the poems The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney to an IB Diploma student from Sevenoaks School (UK). He has also tutored the novels Perfume by German writer Patrick Suskind, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, and Woman at Point Zero by Egyptian writer Nawal El Saadawi to an IB Diploma student from South Island School. Don has also had success tutoring SSAT and SAT vocabulary, reading comprehension, and essay writing to students from French International School (FIS), Chinese International School (CIS), and Island School.

French Tutors

Ms Ludovica Ricci has been tutoring French with us since 2007. Her Bachelor of Arts is from Libera Universita' Maria SS. Assunta, Rome, where she majored in English, French, and Spanish. Ludo's wider commitment to her subjects is impressive: she was given charge of all the French courses at Yin Wa College since November 2009. Ludo also has a TESOL Certificate in Teaching English.

She has tutored a student of Shatin College on the IB Diploma Programme, and a student from Canadian International School on spoken expression. She has tutored grammar to a GCSE student from Benenden School, essay writing to an AQA A-Level student at Oundle School in the UK, and vocabulary to a French student at Badminton School, UK.

Ms Sylvie Rausis is a native speaker of both French and Swiss German, and she speaks English fluently. Sylvie holds a Masters Degree in Russian and Italian Language and Literature from the University of Geneva , Switzerland. Prior to joining International Scholars Tuition, Sylvie tutored French and English at other language centres. Sylvie joined us in July 2007.

Sylvie's tutoring areas include essay writing, verb tenses, sentence structure and reading comprehension, which she has tutored at Edexcel IGCSE level for students at German Swiss International School (GSIS), and advanced vocabulary and composition, which she has tutored for an Edexcel GCE French student at Wycombe Abbey School, UK.

Geography Tutor

Ms Michelle Wong has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.), in which she majored in Geography and English Chinese Translation, from the University of Hong Kong. She specialised in Transport Geography and Sustainable Development. Michelle joined us in November 2009.

Michelle has tutored students in subjects ranging from glacial landscapes and ecosystems to a student of St Swithun's School at GCSE level, migration and globalization to an AQA GCSE student at Blundell's School, UK, and populations and industry to a student of Victoria Shanghai Academy at IB Higher Level.

German Tutor

Ms Julia Schumacher is a native speaker of German, and she holds a Master of Science Degree in Marketing and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English Studies from the University of Strathclyde, UK. She studied Economics at the University of Heidelberg.

Julia has been tutoring German to a student sitting the Edexcel IGCSE examination on the topics of reading comprehension, spoken expression, essay writing and the novel Der Besuch der alten Dame by Friedrich Durrenmatt.

History Tutor

Mr Colin Shields completed several papers dealing with the history of England over thecourse of his degree in English at Cambridge University Cambridge University. Topics ofspecial interest were the reign of the Tudors, and social andpolitical transformations in the Early Modern period including theReformation. Colin has also studied the history of Europe, thehistory of Russia, and the history of the classical world. Insecondary school, he gained an A at History in A-level, and a 5 in APWorld History, as well as a 5 in AP Human Geography (includinghistory of the twentieth-century from a world historicalperspective). Colin is available to teach history to GCSE level, or,by special arrangement, to A-level or IB standard.

Italian Tutor

Ms Ludovica Ricci has been tutoring GCSE, A-Level, and IB students from Tonbridge, Charterhouse, Sherborne Girls, and St Swithun’s School, at IST since 2007. Ludo's Bachelor of Arts is from Libera Universita' Maria SS. Assunta, Rome, Italy, where she majored in English, French, and Spanish.

Ludo is also an Edexcel GCSE Examiner in Italian and has a TESOL Certificate in Teaching. Ludo has also been the Instructor in Charge of all the Programs for Undergraduates for the Italian Language in the Department of Linguistic and Modern Languages of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) since 2006 and an Instructor for Spanish and French courses and summer courses at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) since 2009. Ludo is currently designing a comprehensive Italian GCSE course and an adult conversation evening course to be offered next term.

Mathematics Tutors

Ms Shela Lee graduated from the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (First Class Hons.) and a Master of Science in Financial Economics. In her time at Oxford University she received the Michel Scholarship of Queen's College for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Shela has tutored matrices to a student from Winchester College, polynomials and conics to an OCR A-Level Roedean School in the UK, and quadratic functions and simultaneous equations to students from American International School in Hong Kong. Shela joined us in April 2009.

Mr Calvin Chan holds a Master ofScience in Mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Hons) from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (UK).

Most of Calvin's recent students were preparing for their AS/A2 exams. Calvin has taught trigonometry and equations with modulus to an OCR A-Level student from St George's Ascot, complex numbers and conics to an Edexcel A-Level student from Wycombe Abbey, circle properties and geometry to a Key Stage 3 student from Badminton College, polar coordinates and simple harmonic motion to a student from Rodean School, and De Moivre's theorem and Argand diagrams to an Edexcel A-Level student from Dulwich College.

 

Ms Cecilia Foo has a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (First Class Honours) and a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford (UK). At the end of her first year as an undergraduate, Cecilia was awarded the St Catherine's Undergraduate Scholarship.

Cecilia has been tutoring Mathematics at all levels to international students in Hong Kong since 2003. She began her career specializing in entrance examinations for UK schools, GCSEs and A Levels. Starting 2005, Cecilia has also been helping students with the SAT Reasoning Test and Subject Test, AP Calculus, and even undergraduates. Since 2007, Cecilia has taught many students on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Middle Years Programme (MYP). As of 2009, Cecilia has also been teaching Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

Music Tutor

Mrs Sandra Lau earned a Bachelor of Music Degree with Second Class Honours, Upper Division, with Majors in Free Composition and Techniques of Composition at King’s College University, London (UK) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education Specialising in Teaching at the Secondary School Level from the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. She received the Overseas Specialist Award Teaching Scholarship from the Minister of Education and the Public Service Commission of Singapore, and Piano Grade 8 and Theory Grade 6 from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM).

Sandra has been teaching and tutoring music since 2002 and is proficient at using Sibelius music composition and notation software. As a Music Teacher and Arts Coordinator, she also taught the O-Level syllabus and majors in composition under the Singapore-Cambridge University (London) system.

 

Physics Tutors

Ms Purvi Vyas has a Master of Science Degree in Physics, a Bachelor of Education in Science and Mathematics, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Gujarat University, India. Purvi has had ten years of experience teaching Physics at Secondary School, and she served as an examiner for the Higher Secondary Certificate examination for Standard 12th, conducted by the Gujerat Education Board.

She is a seasoned International Baccalaureate Diploma Examiner in Physics with over six years experience, and she has been a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Applied Physics and Material Science at the City University of Hong Kong since 2008. Since joining IST, Purvi has been tutoring vectors, projectile motion and relativity to a student of Island School at Higher Level IB Physics.

Dr Andrew Parsons earned his Doctorate in Nanophysics and Nanotechnology from Royal Holloway, University of London. He joined International Scholars Tuition School in November 2007, and has been mainly tutoring students at GCSE level, A-Level, and on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

He has tutored waves and mechanics to an AQA A-Level student at Harrow School, optics and electricity to A-Level students from Dulwich College and Woldingham School and momentum and electric circuits to a CIE Pre-U student at Winchester College. Andrew is a fluent speaker of Cantonese, and he also speaks basic Japanese.

Ms Rene Lai earned a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from the University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Physics, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Rene has extensive experience tutoring and teaching in Hong Kong, both at Primary and Secondary levels, for over twenty years. She is currently designing the Science Curriculum for a Local Primary School. Rene's proficiency in the subject was further applied in her position as Assistant Editor for a Physics textbook.

Since Rene joined IST in May 2008, she has tutored statics to an Edexcel IGCSE student at Tonbridge School, kinematics to an AQA GCSE student at Benenden School, and forces to a CIE IGCSE student at German Swiss International School in Hong Kong.

Mr. Trevenan Walther earned a Master of Engineering in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Bath (UK) and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Hong Kong.Trev is currently working in Research at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, HKU utilising mass spectrometry to investigate emerging infectious diseases. Trev has experience working at the interface between the physical and biological sciences and engineering.

While studying at the University of Bath, Trev was part of the winning teams for the BP Design Prize, the BP Book Prize, and the Unilever Product Design Prize. At Bishop Challoner School (UK), Trev earned an A for his Physics A-Level. Before coming to HK, Trev worked at Pfizer as a Trainee Engineer inthe Bioprocess Development Group, where he focused on the laboratory-based research of biologics. Trev has undergone extensive tutor training and has developed a very thorough approach to tutoring and his lessons shall reflect this.

Russian Tutor

Ms Sylvie Rausis is a native speaker of both French and Swiss German, and she speaks English fluently. Sylvie holds a Masters Degree in Russian and Italian Language and Literature from the University of Geneva , Switzerland.

Prior to joining International Scholars Tuition, Sylvie tutored French and English at other language centres. Sylvie joined us in July 2007.

SAT & SSAT Tutors

Mr Don Ho has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Victoria (Canada) and Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta (Canada). Don was also awarded the South-East Asia Business Research Grant and the Asia Pacific Scholar's Grant. Don has been a tutor in Hong Kong since 2000.

Don has tutored SSAT students who have received offers from The Lawrenceville School (USA), The Taft School (USA), and The Hotchkiss School (USA). Don has also tutored an ACT student who now attends Northeastern University (USA) and a GMAT student who now attends the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge. Don is currently tutoring an SAT student who, as a sophomore, scored 98th percentile on the Critical Reading and 94th percentile on the Mathematics on the PSAT.

Dr Jenkins Tsang earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics (Combined Honours) and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Jenkins scored 800 on the Mathematics section of the SAT. He currently has an SAT Math subject test student from Island School. Jenkins has been tutoring with IST since March 2010.

Mr Daniel Chan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons.) in Chemistry from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Advanced) from the University of Sydney, Australia, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

As a student, Daniel achieved a perfect score of 800 on his SAT Chemistry, SAT Math, and the Mathematics section of the SAT Reasoning Test. Daniel has been tutoring with IST since March 2009.

 

Science Tutors

Dr Jenkins Tsang earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics (Combined Honours) and his Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Jenkins has been working in Research and Teaching at the University of British Columbia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Hong Kong since 2002. His research has been published in scientific journals.

He has helped many of his students in one-to-one tutorials and has been successful in guiding his students to pursue further studies and careers in Science. Jenkins has tutored organic, inorganic and physical chemistry at the university level to an undergraduate student from Imperial College London, plant biology to a student at German Swiss International School and simple harmonic motion and wave properties to an IB Physics at Canadian International School.

Mr Daniel Chan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons.) in Chemistry from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Advanced) from the University of Sydney, Australia, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Daniel has three years of tutoring experience in Hong Kong and Australia, in addition to his two years at International Scholars Tuition School. He has also taught respiration and photosynthesis to an OCR A-Level Biology student from Harrow School, intermolecular forces and structure and bonding to an OCR Chemistry A-Level student from Wycombe Abbey School and thermodynamics and kinetic theory to an undergraduate Physics student at Syracuse University, USA

This academic year, he has tutored electricity and magnetism to a student from Hong Kong International School (HKIS), genetic variation and inheritance to a student from German Swiss International School (GSIS), and acids and alkalis to a student from Tonbridge School (UK).

Spanish Tutors

Ms Belisa Hurtado Cheng is a native Spanish speaker. Belisa received her Bachiller Academico from El Instituto Montessoriano, Columbia. She also attended the Colegio Odontologico at the Universitaria Colegio de Bogota, Columbia.

Belisa has over ten years of Spanish tutoring experience in Hong Kong. Since 2008, Belisa has been a Spanish Tutor at the Hong Kong Baptist University, and she works for the Consulate General of Mexico in Hong Kong. Her expertise was also directed into the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where she worked in the Communication and Language Services. Since joining IST, Belisa has been tutoring a student at Chinese International School in grammatical structures, written composition and Spanish vocabulary.

Ms Ludovica Ricci has been tutoring Spanish with us since 2007. Her Bachelor of Arts is from Libera Universita' Maria SS. Assunta, Rome, where she majored in English, French, and Spanish. Ludo's wider commitment to her subjects is impressive: she was given charge of the Spanish courses at Diocesan Boys' School since November 2009, in addition to the extra-curricular activities for Spanish at ISF Academy since February 2010.

Ludo also has a TESOL Certificate in Teaching English. She has also tutored Spanish listening and speaking to a student of La Salle College in Hong Kong, and a student from Winchester College sitting the CIE International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Spanish Listening examination.
